Yesterday this topic came up after inquiries about a grandfather's location when he was dealing with a hold-out pocket of Germans during his time with the 424th Infantry Regiment of the 106th Infantry Division. Here's a link to Floyd's answer to that question: 106thdivision.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=looking&thread=845&page=1#3071Quoting Floyd: The action that the 424th pulled in Northern France was in the Brittany Peninsula, France. There was a German Submarine base at St. Nazaire that did not surrender their troops (90,000 Soldiers) when American and British forces raced through France.
The 424th Regiment was sent to that area (Rennee, France) in late March/April 1945 to help keep the German troops bottled up at that base.
There’s more to the story, nevertheless, that is why the 106th received credit for the Northern France Campaign. Here are some links to photos and history of the submarine pens near St. Nazaire, France: www.ww1cemeteries.com/In%20memory/miscellaneous/st_nazaire_uboat.htmen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Nazaire_submarine_baseFloyd, or anyone else, please feel free to share more on this location and the rest of the story...
