Hello.
I am a proud granddaughter of Alfred J. LeBlanc, who was part of the 106th Division/424th Infantry Division. I am new to this website, and so far have been checking it out reading through current and past posts. My grandfather sadly passed away this past January, and I wished I would have asked him more questions of his service in WWII. He was a quiet, but proud veteran, tellling my sister and I a few stories through the years.
I mainly remember him talking of the Battle of the Bulge, one story in particular, of being in a foxhole with another buddy/soldier, then jumping to the next foxhole apparently with his buddy/the other soldier right behind him, and unfortunately the other soldier not making it to the safety of the 2nd foxhole, and my grandfather obtaining some sort of shrapnel wounds. He never mentioned, but I had a few family members told me that he visited that fallen soldiers family when he returned home. Unsure of this soldiers name. A second story, an Uncle just told me was that he was with his unit who was ambushed by Germans who dressed up as American soldiers in his unit, the killed many, and as soldiers were falling my grandfather "played dead", while laying there, these Germans bayoneted most of the soldiers on the ground to make sure the were dead.
I am somewhat puzzled about his service though. His discharge papers list him in a 16th Engineer Battallion, Company C. There is no mention of this unit in the Battle of the Bulge area. The only noting I was able to locate researching online for this was of a 16th Engineer Combat Battallion in Italy. He did not serve in Italy. He also was not a POW. His separation papers only list him in 106th Infantry, 424th Infantry Regiment. I have been told to by family members his family being worried for a while since his unit went missing (not sure on a duration).
Anyway, I am glad to have found this website for the 106th Division. Looking foward to finding out more information in my search. Thanks and look foward to chatting with some of you soon. Thanks in advance for any asistance.
Karrie
