Hi, My grandfather was in Company A, 81st Combat Engineer Battalion. He passed in 1974 and his bag was stolen when he returned from Europe and according to my mother and uncle he refused to talk about the war. All we have is his discharge paper and a few v-mail letters he was sending to my grandmother (I'll post a scan of them when I have access to a scanner). For a christmas present for my mother I found out the gist of what he did and to my surprise my family had no idea he was awarded the distinguished unit citation. She was absolutely speechless and wants to find out more. I don't have much time tonight so I'll search around the discussion board tomorrow and explore some of the links. The biggest questions are 1)Would anyone know if there is any chance of getting the patch (or medal) from the army this many years later, even if it was given to him and stolen. 2)We have no pictures of him in uniform and would love to see pictures of company A. Anyway, great board and thankyou to whoever put it together. Riley Note: also see this post: 106thdivision.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=looking&thread=668&page=1

Welcome, Riley. I don't have answers to any of your questions, but I am glad to see you here. My grandpa was also in Company A of the 81st CEB. He passed away in 2007, and also didn't talk about the war. In his last years, I was able to engage him in a few conversations about where he was and what he did in the war, and that information provided the springboard for my own research. If only he were still here; I have so much more to ask...and tell him. His family also did not know what battles he was in or any of that. I agree, this is board is a wealth of rare and important information and personal accounts, and is very well administered.

Hello Riley:
I served with Co. G in the 424th Regiment of the 106th Division and saw the first 30 days of the Bulge Campaign. What can you tell me about the "distinguished unit citation"?
Will try to be of help, however additional information about that citation might be useful.

Hey Diana, Thats cool both our grandfathers were in company A. I wish I got to know mine. My mother says I'm just like him. Hey Floyd, I don't know much about the distinguished unit citation except it is equal to the distinguished service cross that is given to a group of soldiers rather then just individually. I'm not sure exactly what the requirements are to be awarded. Below I posted the link to Wikipedia for you. I know Wikipedia can be incorrect sometimes but I did see the same information on more reliable sites. If you scroll down to the list of recipients look for "Combat Command "B", 7th Armored Division" that is where St. Vith is located. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Unit_Citation_%28United_States%29
