A new member ( mstengel) sent this. I'll post a paste: My father, Richard Stengel recently passed. He was in the 592nd field artillery battery "B". He never really wanted to talk much about his war experience. My son did a high school paper about the battle of the buldge and interviewed my dad. When my son said grandpa you are a war hero my dad responded by saying NO, we were being chased up a road, the Germans were unloading on us. One guy named Macaluso jumped off the truck with a 50cal and was mowing the Germans down until he ran out of bullets. We finally saw him fall. He saved all of our lives. He is a war hero! Not me.... i would have been shot in the ass because we always seemed to be running. no sleep or food for days.... Has any one heard this story about Macaluso? recently I found a picture of my dad on the indiana.org website. In the link below the last picture bottom left is my father. Posted by Gene Miller. Do you know if Gene is still alive? www.indianamilitary.org/106ID/SoThinkMenu/106thSTART.htmmy dad is peachie stengel He said they gave him that name because all he would eat at the mess hall was the peaches. Is there more info about the 592nd battery B? Is Gene Miller still alive? Thanks Mike Stengel

Mike, I couldn't find the photo at first. Unfortunately when dealing with the Indiana Military site, the address listed at the top of the page you're on sometimes only takes you to the general board site. But today when I was researching something else, I ran across the photo. Anyone else interested, you can go to the Indiana Military link Mike provided. Then look along the sidebar for the "diaries, obituaries, and articles" link. The photo is, as he noted, listed under Gene Miller's name. Please keep us posted as your search for links to your father's friends continues. Connie LATER UPDATE: HERE'S A DIRECT LINK TO THAT PHOTO ON THE INDIANA MILITARY SITE: www.indianamilitary.org/106ID/Diaries/None-POW/Miller-Gene-592-B/Miller-Gene.htmStill later: I'll add the photo of your dad found there "Peachier" Stengle & Ritts 592/B

Mike,
Was Jim West able to answer your questions about Gene Miller -- whether he is living or not and if he has contact info?
If that lead did not pan out, let me know & I can give you some other contacts.
Connie
PS. I checked the roster which Jim West has been working on for years. And I did find two people listed with the other last name you were inquiring about: Macaluso, Albert J. 32820425 422nd/L VIII-A to Moosburg
Macaluso, August Pfc 33428449 424th/K CIB
The first (Albert) became a POW. Of course, the fact that your father knew this man by name argues for the possibility that there was another man by that last name who was in the 592nd and probably in the 592nd B. In this case he is not yet on the roster...

Hi Connie, I'm sorry my father only gave me the last name and he remembered it clearly and without hesitation. I thought he also said that Macaluso may have been from New York.
I sent an email to John Andrews a few weeks ago. John was in 592 fab "a". No reply. Last time he was signed in was mid November. I believe he has posted on here and mentions a Macaluso. I believe my father said Macaluso was not part of battery "B" but ended up with them.
Again, thank you for your help!
Mike

Mike, I'll send you some other possible contacts by private message post. Hope you have luck in connecting with John Andrews. I appreciate your keeping me posted. Lt. Andrews of 592 A became a POW during the early days of the Bulge. My father was assigned to 592nd A in January of 45 from another decimated Field Artillery unit. 106thdivision.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=introductions&action=display&thread=388I am guessing from what you've said that your father remained free and continued fighting...? Thanks for sharing the journey and the search. Connie

Mike
I just ran across what has to be the Macaluso you heard mentioned. I was reading an after action account of the 592nd found in the Division Association's out of print book The Cub of the Golden Lion Passes in Review. In this report (p. 116 of the book) I found the name of a Private Alfred E. Macaluso. Speaking of action on the 16 Dec. it states, "During the fire fight that ensued in the afternoon, Pvt Alfred E Macaluso, T/5 Robert W Touchette and Corporal Lloyd Marty of Headquarters Battery aided an unidentified gunner corporal from Battery C 589th by serving as a gun crew. This group destroyed one German tank with fire from a 105 howitzer." I'll read on to see if I find more, but that has to be the right Macaluso.

Hi Connie, I read that some where on this board as well. I'm certain that is who my father was referring to. Now, how can we find more about him? Again, thank you for your help.

Hello all: I spoke to John Kline a few weeks ago. Today he sent me a list of 5 guys who were in the 592 FAB "B" battery. From that list I called Gene Miller who is 93 years young and sounding great. As soon as he heard my last name he said your dad was the driver who pulled our gun. He is going to send me photo's of the unit.
We talked for 20 minutes. I said don't be surprised if i call you again. He said call any time.
Very exciting day here....

Picture of Gene Miller from 592 FAB "B" holding baby, after coming off the front line for R&R. I hope that I did the image shack photo capture properly. Mr. Miller said he had a young baby at home about the same age as the baby in the photo., and he asked if he could hold the baby.

I've uploaded the photo under another file format and edited Mike's post. Great picture! It is also thanks to the men of the 106th that that little baby could grow up in peace.

Mike,
Unfortunately with several upgrades in the discussion board, the photo you posted has disappeared. If you hit the board and still have the photo on your computer, it would be great if you could add it again.
When you start writing a reply, you'll see an " Add Attachment " option at the top right hand side of your post. You can hit that and slide the attachment onto the form. It will give you the option of inserting it where you want it. If you don't choose this option and click on the spot where you want it, it will insert the photo at the bottom of your post. You'll see only the words naming the attachment until you hit "create post" at the bottom (or "save changes" if you insert changes while editing a post.
I hope that in speaking to some members of the division you found the info that you were seeking. If your experience is like mine, each discovery answers some questions and also prompts more. Time to discuss those questions with people who were there has pretty much slipped away. But thanks to Jim West, Carl Wouters, and others many stories have been collected...
