I am interested in finding information about my father who died when I was 16 years old. I copied the information in the subject line from his discharge papers. His name was David Verl Allen and he was a Staff Sergeant in Company I 422nd Infantry Regiment 106th Division. I would really like to hear from anyone who can tell me anything about what his service experiences would have been and, of course, if anyone specifically remembers him. I realize this will be hard as he would have been 88 years old if he were still alive. He died from a massive heart attack at age 45 on December 1, 1965.

I was in the same spot you were as far as information so I joined the 106th Division Association as an associate member ($10.00 per year) and John Klein sent me a mailing list of surviving members of my father's unit that I wrote to and received many replies. I also purchased a book called " St. Vith - Lion in the Way" from the Barnes and Noble website that has the most complete information about the 106th that I have been able to find. It was written by the Division Historian. You can also go to www.IndianaMilitary.org and click on the 106th Division button and you will find a lot of personal diaries written by members of the 422nd. If you would like more information E-mail me at gfgrant8443@aol.com and I will forward what I can. Frank Grant

Frank gives great advice to the post. I have found John Kline to be a very valuable resource, as well as the 106th Association and the website that Frank referenced....which is being continually updated. Carl Wouter's also has a website that is quite outstanding.....www.the106thinfantrydivsion.be.tt/

Attempting to review and update info on older posts... I should note that the two websites mentioned above by Frank and Roger now appear on the fader bar that welcomes you to this website's home page. The Indiana Military Site link has been amended so it now takes you directly to the 106th Infantry section of that board. And, Carl's site has a new address. There is a bit more information on your father on the Indiana Military Site's Roster. I believe the source was a POW list. In addition to giving your father's serial # it also notes that he was held as a POW at Stalag IXA and that he received a Combat Infantry Badge. More info on the book mentioned by Frank ( St. Vith: Lion in the Way ) can be found here: 106thdivision.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=books&action=display&thread=120 PS. If you're in a research digging mode you might also look at the links under the names of men from the 422nd mentioned on this site: 106thdivision.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=index&action=display&thread=416And you could check out the info & links on the 422nd under Unit Specific Discussions: 106thdivision.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=unit&action=display&thread=531
