Tower, William O. (Mortar gunner; Recon?) Link to bio outline on ax- pow site: www.axpow.org/towerwilliam.htmTower is also listed on the Indiana Military Site Roster His listing on the roster shows his unit as "Recon" The ex pow site lists his responsibilities as "mortar gunner" It gives only 106th Infantry Division as his assignment. His date of captivity is listed on the ax POW site as 12/17/44 so there is a story here outside the mass surrenders...

Can anyone shed some light on job descriptions. Are the two job descriptions concurrently possible? Were there mortar gunners in division reconnaissance?

Hi Connie:
Every rifle Company in a Regiment had a Heavy Weapons platoon. The Heavy Weapons Platoon was divided into two parts; the machine Gun Section (30 caliber, air cooled light machine-gun) and the Mortor section (60mm).
D Co., H Co., & L Co.'s were Heavy Weapon Co.'s. Their Machine Guns were 50 Cal. water cooled and Mortors were 80mm. Squads from these Companyies could be assigned wherever they were needed within the Regiment.
Is this information helpful?
