If a Soldier was going to be wounded he'd wish for a wound that wasn't life threatning, yet one that would send him to a hospital; a place where it was warm and there was a hot meal.
Several G.I.'s in our Company were the envy of everyone.
They broke their false teeth trying to eat a D Ration bar.
The D bar was tougher than a boiled owl. It was so hard that chewing it was impossible. Some of us put it on top of our helmets and hit it with anything that would break it in pieces; then put a piece in our mouth and leave it alone. In due time it would disolve.
The men who broke their teeth trying to chew the D Bar were sent to the rear for a new set of teeth. That got them off the front lines for over a week.
They had a place to sleep and have a hot meal, even it was soup, while they were gone.
That was one way to get off the front lines without getting shot.
Floyd, 424th Regiment.

Thanks Connie:
Here'a another fact about the D ration bar.
Some of the fellows put it in their mess kit and tried to melt the darn bar. That didn't work either. It would disolve just enough to scoot around the mess kit in its' own juice.
Yet, it still couldn't be chewed.
I wish it were possible to remember some of the remarks the G.I.'s made about that darn thing. On the other hand those words may not be acceptable on this site.
