Trench foot was a very hurtful thing. G Company, of the 424th, had many casualties from it because of a lack of overshoes during the Bulge Campaign. Basic training instructors, in Camp Shelby, MS lectured us about the problems trench foot could cause. To this day, I'm very thankful to them for the warnings they constantly preached to us about that potential problem. Few, in any soldiers, returned to front-line duty after they were sent to a hospital with trench foot. Read the attachment for additional information. Floyd Attachments:

Hello Floyd, Thanks for the further explanation regarding trench foot. My grandfather Bennett experienced trouble with trench foot sometime after parachuting in the Normandy invasion. All I have been told is that it was quite troublesome for him after its initial onset. As always, your input is always appreciated. Karrie

Hello Karrie: Rarely, did front line soldiers have a chance to remove their boots. They wore them 24/7 day after day. Thus, if a Soldiers boots became wet and stayed damp the skin reacted to the continous damp condition. Frost bite would complicate the situation. Blood circulation in the foot was slowed to a minimum, or almost nothing. Next, the feet would begin to turn a blueish black. If not treated in time, a Soldier's toes could be amputated and even some of the feet. In extreme cases the entire foot had to be removed. Trench foot was a very nasty thing. Once, after a very long hike, all of us had to remove our boots & socks for a foot inspection. Fifty percent of the men left in our Company, were sent to hospitals with trench foot. Our Company strength was reduced to about half of what it was when the Bulge began. If we would have had overshoes, a man probably wouldn't have been lost because of trench foot..
