Throughout the years that separate us from this war, tributes have been paid one at a time to men from the 106th who have passed on. Some are found here in this discussion board. Others are written deeply on the hearts of those who knew these men.

Jim West has attempted to note these losses in the Division Roster when he learns of them. www.indianamilitary.org/106ID/Rosters/RosterZOHO.htm. Some have been noted elsewhere on the board, but to keep them from being lost amid other information, I will begin noting them here, too.

I met this fine man first at the Indianapolis Reunion and later at the New Orleans Reunion. He loved life to its fullest. His story is in the latest issue of the CUB, Memoriam pg. 39.

Another Lion goes to rest. Milton Weiner marched on following a battle with Parkinson's Disease and cancer. He was an 81MM mortar gunner with Company M/424 and served with honor from the landing at Le Harve in Dec.1944 through the Battle of the Bulge to the end of the war in Germany. In 2013 he accepted the Order of the Golden Lion of the 106th. He passed on May 16, 2015.

Unfortunately time marches on and none of us are getting any younger. As I was reading these updates it made me wonder....just how many of the 106th are still alive? I know we are losing WW2 vets at an incredible rate and based on the numbers I last knew, there won't be any left within my lifetime.

Such a sad truth. I have no idea of exact numbers left. But I do know, as you do, that those who were just 20 years old in 1944 when the Battle of the Bulge broke out are now 94. I do know one man, a doctor in the 590th Field Artillery Battalion who is still going strong at 102. But at this point for all these men I believe that every moment we have them with us is now an incredible gift.

Spot on. I had gotten to thinking since this past July was 13 years since Dad passed. As you mentioned....age....Dad would have been 93 in March. I just checked some numbers and it mentioned that 372 WW2 vets are dying per day and there are only about 350,000 left. I did some quick math that would indicate in a little more than 2.5 years....about mid 2021....there will be no more left. Heck, most of the Vietnam era vets are in their 70's now!
