Fred A Carr, age 91, of ... Bloomsburg, (PA) died unexpectedly of natural causes, in the arms of his beloved wife, Betty, at their home on Wednesday evening, March 4, 2015.
Born on April 14, 1923 in Hemlock Township, he was a son of the late Raymond and Verna (Shoemaker) Carr and the last survivor of their seven children.
Fred attended the Buckhorn school through the eighth grade. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Petrified Forest in Arizona and Glacier National Park in Montana.
He was drafted into the US Army where he served with the 81st Combat Engineers Battalion of the 106th Infantry Division. He participated in the campaigns of Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and was a participant in the Battle of The Bulge. After his military service he resided in Bloomington, Ind. where he worked as a carpenter for several years before returning to Buckhorn.
Fred was selp employed as a contractor for many years and also farmed. He was a founding member and charter member of the Buckhorn Community Fire Co. and a former member of the Jerseytown Hunting Club.
He served on the Bloomsburg Area School Board during the 1960’s and was the Bloomsburg representative to the operating committee for the Columbia Montour Vocational Technical School, where he was instrumental in the planning and building of the school building. He continued to serve on both boards into the 1970’s.
