Today, November 11, 2016.
I would like to send out my most sincere Thank You's to all the veterans and associated family members of this Message Board. What was done so many years ago still lives on within these pages. If you are reading this then you are probably already a member and I thank you for logging in. Feel free to click around the posts and see what is new. If you are a visitor, please post a message and someone will get back to you. The general membership is at 473 people. That is a very good number. The number of members who visit the MB is, sadly, much lower.
I truly believe that this is a magical website. The lives and experiences of these brave men and women are here just waiting for someone to shine on light on their stories. Today people all over this country posted pictures and stories about their loved ones on social media. It was great to share in so many heartfelt and proud comments. But today was just one day out of the year. This MB is available every day of the year 24 hrs a day. It's truly a one-of-a-kind portal to historical facts and intimate details of what it took to fight as a Golden Lion when things were desperate and confusion reigned. The Battle of the Bulge was not something expected. The 106th, along with every other division, was not prepared for this kind of assault. It required courage and strength to fight the onslaught of the German armies lined up to run rampant over the 75 mile line of battle. What the 106th did has been recorded here, not just the facts and figures but the flesh and bone stories straight from the heart of the Division.
Please free free to navigate anywhere you fancy. Be creative and connect the dots any way you wish. That's one of the genius things about the 106th MB. You don't have to read it like book, front to back. It's not a movie that has a beginning, middle and end. It's a school of sorts. Think about a subject then guide yourself to it. Make some notes then pick a different path. You're on your way at the speed you wish. Then get curious and ask a question to one of the moderators that have built and nurtured this special place. You will get an answer. Then, when you're ready, tell your family and friends what you have learned about your special vet and encourage them to check this place out too. And it's all free! No credit cards accepted. It's not about money, it's about important lives and examples of courage under fire.
Thank you for reading this. It's not in my nature to be so outwardly passionate but today is Veteran's Day. Their day. My uncle, Tsgt. Dick Maslankowski, fought bravely with Company E of the 106th. His story, and that of thousands of other veterans, is here waiting to be learned and remembered. They deserve to be remembered. They gave it their all - all for you. It's all just a few clicks away.
