"During World War II, Murray Stein served with the in the army with Company I, 423rd Regiment, 106th Infantry Division. He trained at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and Camp Atterbury, Indiana, before going to the European Theater of War. Stein participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in combat and captured by the Germans. He was held prisoner at Stalag IVB, Muhlberg, Germany, 12/19/1944 - 6/1945. Stein's awards and decorations include Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Purple Heart Medal, POW Medal, European Theater Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a corporal when he was discharged from the army."

*POW- combat boots taken after capture; shipped in 40 & 8 box car; Spent several months at IV-B then shipped to work camp at Elster on Elbe; developed hernia from lifting railroad ties there; sent to hospital in Halle (Sp?), Germany where he was liberated by members of the 104th Infantry Division
*Weight when captured about 210 lb (sturdy football player in H. S.; 6' 4" tall); weight when liberated 126 lb.
