Balzarini, John 590-B POW IVB & Slaughterhouse 5VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT INTERVIEW in Feb. 2004 (102 minute): memory.loc.gov/diglib/vhp/story/loc.natlib.afc2001001.39669/John was in high school in a small town in Illinois when drafted and completed his high school after the war. He was 19 years old when captured; His basic training occurred at Camp Roberts in California. From there he joined the 106th Infantry Division at Camp Atterbury. He sailed from Boston aboard the Wakefield. He mentioned staying England and taking an LST to France.and briefly noted travel to Belgium and the front. Most of the interview focused on his captivity which included a long march to the box cars & the aerial bombing of the train while it was at the station in Limburgh. The stories of his captivity are complex and and moving. When freed he was flown to Camp Lucky Strike & later shipped back to the states, landing in the same port he had departed from: Boston.
