Hello all, I am the granddaughter of Pfc John P. O'Meara, 423rd / 3rd BN / HQ Co. I am working on a novel based on his story, and came across his POW account, several letters and papers, and a few photos of that time. This was one I believe to be taken at Camp Atterbury (not positive). My grandfather is pictured in the lower right corner. His papers mention several people often, I assume close buddies of his. Included in his writings are John Ane (passed away in POW camp), John E. Naugle, Gifford B. Doxsee, James Dent, Robert "Bob" Donald, Wilson B. Nailor (passed away while a POW), and a few others only mentioned by last name (Green, Monahan, Nelson, Feldmott). Does anyone recognize the others in this photo? Many thanks in advance for any leads!

Great photo! You have embarked on an amazing project. I hope we can help find some connections for you. I will immediately post your grandfather's name and a link to this post on the Site Soldier Index and begin adding names of friends and link to this post there, too. I did note the name of Gifford Doxsee on your list. You have probably discovered more info on this soldier already. There is a thread on this discussion board with links to numerous sources of info on him: 106thdivision.proboards.com/post/2766/thread

Thanks so much Connie! Indeed, Gifford Doxsee left a treasure of resources. Turns out my grandfather was one of the three he mentions during the march after being captured who laid a coat on the ground in a barnyard and huddled together for warmth. They were still together when the rail cars were bombed in Limburg, but lost touch after they were sent out to separate Arbeitskommandos near Dresden (Doxsee to Slaughterhouse V and my grandfather to a paper mill near Freital). Appreciate your help!

I've added the names of your fathers friends and acquaintances the Site Soldier Index with a link to your post. Reaching the portion of the list that was just last names, I began checking the Indiana Military site's large and growing roster. www.indianamilitary.org/106ID/Rosters/RosterZOHO.htm. I'm betting on Daniel J. Green as he is the only one I see who was in the 3rd BN, HQ CO of the 423rd Infantry Regiment. For your Monahan, I'm banking on Thomas H. Monahan Jr., Pfc who is also in this unit. I couldn't find anyone by the last name Nelson who fit the bill. For your last name I found a possibility with a one letter change in the last name: Feldsott, Louis H. Pfc 12 128 770 423 INF/3 BN/HQ CO 4-B Muhlberg Sachsen What do you think? Any possibility that Feldmott was Feldsott? Hope the other educated guesses help, too... P.S. In checking the Roster I found that Pfc John P. O'Meara, 423rd / 3rd BN / HQ Co was sent to Stalag IV-B. I'll add a link to that site here and add his name to that site. This note from a Cub Magazine was also on the Indiana Military Site Roster under John O'meara's name: Gifford Doxsee and I were together when our train was bombed on a rail siding on our way to Stalag IV-B. We were lying in an open field as three bombs fell around us, holding hands and praying. We were okay, but five of the others who had broken out of the rail car were killed. I lost track of Gifford when we were sent to different work camps near Dresden. CUB 12/2016 Stalag IV-B 106thdivision.proboards.com/post/4946/threadWhen adding notes to the IV-B site I saw that Loy Dean Lawler also was sent from here to a work camp outside Dresden. I know there were a lot of work camps, but it's worth checking his account to see if it bears any similarity to the place where John O'meara was...
