This native of Columbia, S.C. began his basic training at age 18. After that he was sent to Auburn College with the ASTP program and was there until the program was dissolved in March of 1944. From there he was sent to join up with the 106th Infantry Division at Camp Atterbury.

Surrendered noon Dec. 18; He writes:" We arrived at Stalag XII—A in Limburg about dark on December 30th or 31st. Housing was in large medical tents which had been captured. We slept on the ground with no heat in the tents (we had no heat in any of the various places which we were housed during the march). The following night we received “grass soup”, which was our first meal since Koblenz. New Year’s of 1944 was spent at XII—A and several days following. We were loaded in box cars for turned out to be a five or six day ride to Stalag IVB at Muhlberg." His stay in Muhlberb was followed by time at a work camp 3 Km from Zeitz in in the small farming community of Gleina about three km. from Zeitz (arriving 3rd wk of January) With about 120 men he was above a home and barn in what had been a pre-war night club. They worked daily in cleaning a bombed out factory. He was liberated Friday April 13.

Rev. Ewell Conway Black Jr. BISHOPVILLE, S.C. - Rev. Ewell C Black, Jr., 90, died March 14, 2015. Mr. Black was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Wages Black. He is survived by son David W. E. Black, daughter and son-in-law Deborah B. and Timothy Reeves. Mr. Black was born in Columbia, SC, February 21, 1925, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ewell C. Black.
Following 20 years with The State newspaper of Columbia, SC, Mr. Black resigned in 1962. He entered Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA and was ordained a Presbyterian Minister in 1965. He was also an ordained Deacon and Elder in Covenant Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, prior to entering the seminary. Mr Black served congregations in Greenwood, MS, Saluda, SC, Travelers Rest, SC, and Bishopville, SC, and Executative Presbyter of Harmony Presbytery in South Carolina. At his retirement from Bishopville Presbyterian Church, he was honored by the Congregation by being named Pastor Emeratous. Following retirement, Mr. Black served as Supply Minister in several congregations in South Carolina.
Mr. Black served in WWII in the A.S.T.P. and the 106th Infantry Division. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Prisoner of War being liberated April 13, 1945. A graveside service will be conducted in Bishopville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 215 S Main St., Bishopville, SC...
