Excerpt from an email from the National Archives in March 2023:
The Textual Reference Archives II Branch (RR2RR) has custody of the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1917- (Record Group 407) and the Records of U.S. Army Operational, Tactical, and Support Organizations (World War II and Thereafter) (Record Group 338). Military unit files among these records consist mostly of historical reports, after action reports, unit journals, and general orders. The files are arranged hierarchically, identification of the specific unit (i.e., division, regiment, and battalion) and date of interest are necessary before a search can be conducted. They do not include personnel or medical information. We do not have a name index to these records.
Within Record Group 407 Entry NM-3 427 is the series World War II Operations Reports, 1940–1948. This series of records includes records related to the 106th Infantry Division. These records may have been used as a source for the student paper that you requested. According to the container list included with the catalog description, boxes 12012-12039 are related to the 106th Infantry Division and attached units. These records have not been digitized.
Additionally within Record Group 338 Entry UD 37042 is the series Unit Histories, 1943–1967. This series of records includes records related to the 106th Infantry Division. The catalog description includes a list of files. These records have not been digitized.
