I can remeber one story my father had told about after the bulge had begun, and they had been overrun and everyone was scattered all about. He said they had been out for three days him and two others and had nothing to eat in all that time and they came across a mes serving hotdogs. They told them they had not eaten in three days. They were each allowed to have one hot dog. He said that was the best hotdog he ever had.Ican also rmember he said they were on thier way to blow up a sub base when the war ended. They had driven in blackout all night when they came up on a town with the lights on and as they drove by they heard people shouting Le gare fini? He said no one spoke french and they kept on going. When they got to where they were going to set up to open fire on this sub base they found out that the war had ended.

My fathers name was Les Newnam he was in Battery B of the 589th FABN. He was from St.Michael,s Md. a small town on the eastern shore of Maryland. Served from 1943-1946 I believe he did basic at S.C. I remember something about him saying he got there on New Years Eve possibly I,m not sure if this is correct or not. I can remember him talking alot about being in Indiana and my mother comming out there to be near him though. He used to say he was one of 13 truck drivers I'm guessing that pulled a howitzer?

Do you have any idea which Battery your father was in in the 589th? If he was in Service Battery, the truck he drove could have been part of an ammunition train. Or, he could have hauled other vital supplies like food. Connie My fathers name was Les Newnam he was in Battery B of the 589th FABN.
