I am looking for information on my grandfather. His name is Elmer Leonard Trefren. The information I have is very limited, but here it is... He served in the Army or Army Air force, he was KIA in or around Germany in 1944. I don't even have a date. He was from Lyndonville, Vermont. He was married not to long before he went into service, his wife's name was Hope. I know that a large part of this division came from the New England area and that the training and active service time periods line up with his service. I am hoping that someone may remember him. I realize that I maybe in the wrong place so thanks for your attention and time.

I just did a web search and had a hit. I found Elmer Leonard Trefren from Lyndon VT KIA in WWII listed on a family tree site: genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Caledonia,County::vt::17212.html If this is your grandfather and they have the date of death right (Oct. 21, 1944 in Germany), then your concern that you may have the wrong division is correct. The bulk of the 106th did not leave the US until Oct/ November 1944 and at that point they were headed for England. They did not sail for the continent until late November and early December and did not go on line in Belgium & Germany until Dec. 11th. If I were you, I'd retain this posting for a while, anyway... at least while you verify this information... and it would be nice if you retained it longer. It would be good to hear the results of your quest as you go along. Having inquired here, you are a part of us now. I'm sure others will want to cheer you on, too, as you search for your Grandfather's story... PS. I just tried clicking on the blue part of the link I pasted above. It doesn't work. Somehow the whole link I pasted on doesn't get highlighted. So, you'll have to copy down the rest of the link and add it to the end or see if you can copy and paste...
