Late Awards

Some awards were not issued /authorized until 46 or 47. Steve Dixon who is in charge of the board for the 70th division dug out the lists of all late awards coming to men in the 106th. Some may not be aware that they had earned these awards. Here's the list:

That list was compiled from two books that I have: Index to the General Orders, War Department, 1941-1947, edited by Brandon T. Wiegand, and Index to the General Orders, Dept. of the Army, 1947-1949, also edited by Brandon.

In each of these volumes, the following information is listed if known. NAME: RANK: UNIT: MEDAL: SOURCE DOCUMENT. Here's an example:

Aylesworth, Carl A., PFC, Company H, 422nd Infantry, 106th Division, BSM, (GO#46, 1947, WD)

All entries are based on General Orders on file in the National Archives.

Often times, citations took time to make it through for final approval. Hence the medals being awarded at such a late date. Some of our 70th men were in the same situation.

Conversations this week between Steve Dixon who keeps the web for the 70th Infantry Division and Jim West, founder of this Discussion Board and keeper of the Indiana Military site noted that both have found errors in the work of the author of these lists. Steve noted that the author worked from documents in the National Archives and that some of these documents were in poor condition and hard to read. So there could be errors in spelling or even in reading of the award abbreviation, etc. on this list. But it is a start.
