Easy Front Line Duty
When the 424th Regiment was officially stationed at Renne, France we were assigned the task of more front line duty.
Our job was to see to it that about 90,000 German troops didn’t try to escape being trapped at St. Nazire, in the Brest Peninsula; a port that was still a German Submarine base.
There were towns and villages near St. Nazier (I don’t remember their names) where a G.I. would go to when off duty and, German and American Soldiers would “rub shoulders” while browsing through stores and various places. We didn’t bother them and they didn’t bother us. We simply exchanged friendly smiles with each other.
How different from the B.O.B. days.
Incidentally, tomorrow April 25, I’m scheduled to go on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to see the WWII Memorial and other places of interest in the area.
It's go there and back in one day. So, it will be a busy time for all involved.

Floyd
I visited the Memorial a few years ago and it is an awsome experience. Be sure to have your guide show you "Kilroy" tucked back in the corner.

Hi, Floyd,
By now you must be back home. I also hope the DC trip went smoothly and was a meaningful one. It sounds like a LONG day!
I also have accounts from my fathers letters of some of that time in France. I have transcribed them but have not yet dug into the maps and absorbed the context. It's interesting to hear your account. I know that Dad got in to see the submarine pens after the surrender.

Hello Connie:
Honor Flight Day was a wonderful experience. I'm still on "cloude nine". I'll get back to earth this afternoon; the lawn needs mowing!

Frank:
I missed seeing "Killroy'. Your message didn't get read until today. I remember seeing signs while in Europe that read "Killroy was here"
Karl:
It was a great day and I had a wonderful time!
