When reading the web notes on the museum at Bastogne, I saw a note that WWII Veterans received free admission. When checking on the museum near the Malmedy massacre site at Baugnez, I did not see this notation and checked. A reply came back immediately:
"We didn't noted that it's free admission for the Vet because for us it's clear that they must have the free admission.
We have had a lot of Veterans and all have had the free admission."
That appeared to be the case at every war related museum visited. Most went beyond the free admission. One gave a $5. booklet away free the veteran in our group. Another, with permission, took a photo of the veteran in our group asked for a brief written memory for their records.
And individuals took the veteran's presence personally. Some teared up and many offered grateful thanks for what the veteran and his companions, the living and those who died there, had done for the Belgian people.
The free admission at museums is not just a perk. It is a small symbol of gratitude.
