From Jim West today: The latest Diary to be added to the website, is that of Mr. Herbert E. Stokes, Jr., 422/HQ. Find it here: tinyurl.com/106th-HerbStokes Be sure and visit this diary that was provided by Mr. Stokes, himself. A very well written account, supported by many great photographs. James D. This came from Jim West today: Did you know that Stanley Berenstain, famous for his children's books, "The Berenstain Bears" was in the 106th at Camp Atterbury ? See www.indianamilitary.org/WakemanHospital/SpecialPeople/Berenstain/Berenstain.htm He was transferred into the Division from Ft Bragg, to an unknown 106th Artillery unit, where he suffered internal bleeding. Admitted to Wakeman Hospital, the 106th left Camp Atterbury and he remained behind. Col Blocker, Wakeman Hospital Chief of Plastic Surgery, saw him making sketches, and was so impressed, he appointed him as the Graphic Artist. He sketched "step charts" of the various procedures that were implemented by Col Blocker. And now you know ........ West

Reading the interesting article (link above) about Barenstain's short stay with the 106th I noted the mention of his Field Artillery Captain Raines. This was shortly before the 106th left Atterbury, but I don't see Raines on the list of battery commanders. Anyone know more about him?
