This post is to announce to the Message Board that the Unit Journal for the 6951 Provisional Bn serving at Prisoner of War Temporary Enclosure A-2 (Remagen) can now be viewed at www.indianamilitary.org. Click on 106th Division, scroll to and open Unit Information, click on 6951 PWTE & 62 Hospital. Great companion reading can also be found under Reports. The Reports section provides maps and other information about several of the PWTEs including the one at Remagen. An alternative route to just the Unit Journal document would be www.tinyurl.com/POW-duty. Both of these site references are the work of Jim West (whose name you frequently see on this Message Board).
The Unit Journal traces the opening of PWTE A-2 in April 1945 until June at which time the 106th Division was relieved of responsibility for the camp. The document is a daily recording of troop strength and units assigned, supply strength, daily activities within the camp, deaths, reports of attempted escapes, results of interviews of German PoWs, names of some officers as well as PoWs, numbers of admissions and discharges from the camp etc.
Another excellent source of information about handling German PoWs and the PWTEs is Carl Wouters' website at 106thinfantry.webs.com. This site includes information about the PWTE A-2 as well as other information and photographs. Carl is one of the administrators of this Message Board!
My personal interest in these documents is that my father served with the 6951 Provisional Bn, Detachment F. My sincere thanks to Jim for scanning all the information I sent him....it must have taken HOURS to do it. The same goes for Carl who has developed a site detailing the 106th Division and he, too, scanned information I was able to send him. Both sites offer an incredible amount of information to anyone interested in the 106th....we are fortunate to have people like Jim and Carl who are commited to preserving information about this Divison and the role it played in our history.
