Hello all, I'm new to this site. I'm trying to track down some information on Maj Gen Alan Jones, one of the 106th ID commanders. I know he was wounded in December 1944. I think he was eventually shipped back to the US to recover. I believe this happened in March 1945. Does anybody know what ship he went back on and the specific dates of when he departed Europe and arrived in the US? I believe my grandfather was onboard this ship and so I'm trying to gather some more information on this. Thanks very much

Robert, Yours looks like an interesting quest. I am anxious to see it unfold. I personally have no knowledge of when Major General Jones returned to the states, but it sounds as if you have some family history that connects here... Unless there is information beyond what I know, Major General Jones did not sustain a wound. But he was rushed from the battlefield in Vielsalm area just after midnight moved December 22 to December 23 with what looked like heart attack symptoms. He had been going almost non-stop since the 16th of December under intensely trying conditions. As you work the question of the ship your grandfather returned on (pursuing both the possible Jones connection and other leads), there is a troop ship site that may be helpful (if you haven't discovered it already): ww2troopships.com/crossings.htm It is my understanding that after the war all record of ship passengers were ordered destroyed. But this site has attempted to reconstruct some of that information from first hand and diary accounts. I'll ask a few others to see if they have any knowledge of Major General Alan Jones's return to the states. Please keep us posted on your discoveries, too. Thanks! Connie PS What division was your grandfather in?
