After landing, many of the division waited for the rest of their unit to show up before leaving France for Belgium. The mud experienced in maneuvers was revisited here.
And, when they reached the St. Vith area, some mentioned mud beneath the deep snow. Of course with trucks to supply a whole division making their way to their own supply dumps and to the men on the lines, there were places that became a mire of mud even amid the cold and snow. I don't know what it was like in December of 44 in the places trod only by feet...

Hello:
I remember the mud, near LaHarve, France, after we landed at Omaha Beach. The days there were rainy & misty, all the time
We bivouacked there for several days, while waiting for a truck convoy to move us to the front lines.
Some of us visited US Navy ships (Submarine Chasers). They invited us on board and showed us their living quarters; also where they had their meals.
WOW! They had all the comforts of home; shower and all; every day.
We (the 424th Regiment) were about to experience over a month (24/7) without a change of clothes, no mail and no food (sometimes water) for several days at a time.
It was a blessing that life came just one day at a time.
Floyd 2nd Btn. 424th Regiment.
