Sandy, Please forgive me if I ask some elementary questions. My military vocabulary is limited. From what you say here, I am assuming that your dad was transferred into the 106th Division sometime after training that ended in May of 1944? ITB? Infantry Training Battalion? Connie PS. I just did a quick cursory search and learned that Camp Croft was an Army Infantry Replacement Training Center in South Carolina. The link I hit on will probably be of little help to you but may be of some general interest as it shows people of note who passed through Croft Camp www.schistory.net/campcroft/people/whoswho.htmlMore general information on Camp Croft can be found at www.schistory.net/campcroft/It looks like a bit of the history of the 29th ITB can be found on this site at: www.schistory.net/campcroft/29th_history.pdfThis probably does not get down to the company detail you were looking for, but it at least brings me up to speed on the question. Hope you've had more luck in your search. My father was at Camp Croft as a non-com.........then Fort Benning at OCS............ then on to Fort Jackson where the 106th Division was formed. It is possible that your father may have been re-assigned from Camp Croft. He was 1st Lt John M. Krol -106th-422nd reg-HQ

T.L. Austin Jr. 424 C
My fathers name was T.L. Austin, Jr. from Madill, OK. He was a Staff Sgt and served in the 106th Division, 424th Infantry, Company C. His service dates 7/15/41 through 9/14/45. He was in The Battle of the Bulge, I believe St. Lo, and possibly St Vith. He was wounded and hospitalized in Ramagen, Germany. I am taking a trip to Europe and trying to follow his route. Can you help.

TL Austin Jr. 424C Glad to have you with us...
Interested in your post... I know that when I went to Belgium, the route of the 424th was among the things I carried, but I can't lay my hands on it or its source immediately... and I'm on the run today and tomorrow. Will get back to you.
In the meantime there are others who may be able to do a better job answering some of your questions.
Connie
PS Your dad's service dates tell me he had a military history before the 106th was activated...

T.L. Austin Jr. 424 C.Hello: I served with Company G in the 424th Regiment, took part in a great deal of the Battle of the Bulge and revisited Belgium, for fourteen days, in 2010 with Connie, her husband & another person. In place of a guided tour, three of us shared the rental of a car. The advantage of this over a guided tour was as follows: We went where and when we wanted to go, stayed as long all wanted to and, changed our minds about our itinerary on the spot, at lunch time and maybe the night before. You will never regret going to Belgium whether you rent a car, or take a guided tour. However, the more preparation you do in advance of your trip the smoother it will be. - - - Here's wishing you a most pleasant journey. T. L. Austin 424 C
By now you've connected with the link to the roster & found your Dad's info there... & I've contacted Jim West of the Indiana Military Site/ Roster with the additional info I sent you.
I'm still looking for the list of 424 locations I once had in hand. I'll do some more searching... But, of course, there were variations from Company to company that I have definitely not traced. We both can do some web searching!
I have added your dad's name to the Site Soldier Index on this board with a link to your post here...
More later...

.T. L. Austin 424 C
Ok... I definitely need to spend spme time overhauling my files, but I found something. It is not the original list of 424th sites I worked with & I don't have a source list. And it certainly is not broken down to show unit details. So if C, were for example, in reserve at some point this list would not show that. It is a regimental list. The whole regiment was obviously not in the same exact spot at the same time. When the Bulge broke out they were spread out in pockets over approximately a 9 mile front. But it is a jumping off point as you flesh out your research:
Dec. 16- front locations Dec 17 retreat toward Burg Reuland, Our Berg Dec. 26 Manhay Dec 30 - pulled off line in Manhay; Warzee Jan. 6 - Aisomont Jan 9- 17 Wanne, Spineaux, Ennal Jan 18- Deidenberg, St. Vith Jan 26 Mendell (??) afterwards pulled back for R&R @ Plainevaux near Leige Feb. 6 Siegfreid Line Mar 15 Pulled back with division for R & R near St. Quentin France 1 April- division training reconstituted units near Rennes France 22 April - most of division started move for Rhine...
Hope that helps... It gives you points to confirm, refute, or refine...
