Hello All:
My thoughts are; the war in Europe & Pacific Theater was over. The majority of WWII Soldiers went home.
Yet, there was still heaps of work to be done on a war torn continent It would take years to rebuild towns and cities. Some Soldiers remained behind to help initiate a new beginning for the Citizens in those Countries.
Following are some of my thoughts.
April 1945 to March 1946
Many 424th Infantry Regiment Soldiers were witnesses to some history making events during this period of time. A number of men were fortunate enough to return to the United States with the Regiment during the summer months of 1945.
However oodles of men from the Regiment were held over by the Army as “essential” and assigned to other units in Europe; principally France, Belgium & Germany. A number of those Soldiers returned home, months later, with European War Brides.
Many towns and cities all over Europe were devastated from the results of air raids by Allied & German aircraft, particularly during the later months of the war.
Numerous Displaced People, who were slave laborers under the Hitler regime during the War were protesting the idea of going back to their homeland, especially Russia.
Tensions were beginning to develop between the United States and England toward Russia because of ridiculous demands the Russian Government was attempting to impose on much of Europe. The cold War was born and the Berlin Air Lift began in the late 1940’s.
Common every day essentials for the American Soldier were extremely scarce for a majority of European citizens to posses . In addition, there was a shortage of food, among other things.
Innumerable numbers of American Soldiers became ambassadors for the United State through the sharing of their chocolate bars, soap, cigarettes and other miscellanies items in Europe’s’ war torn countries.
Thousands of people were living in their basements because their homes above ground were partially or completely destroyed from the results of war. Cities and villages looked as if a giant tornado had violently destroyed the entire area.
The Marshall Plan was born. Billions of U.S. dollars contributed to rebuilding war torn Europe.
These are some of the days gone by (mirrors of the past) that, at times, I reflect on while in the twilight years of life. I ‘m proud to be a WWII Veteran who played a small part in ending the blackout years Europe’s citizens endured for too many years. Once again, the lights came on again, all over Eyrope.
