Uncountable numbers of teen-age Soldiers realized one benefit from serving in WWII. They were merely boys as they entered the Armed forces. Yet, when the majority of them received their discharge, they were men.
Life for them, at this point now, developed into a serious affair. They found a job, married the “girl back home” who was waiting for them and raised a family. Tens of thousands of Veterans went to school on the G.I. bill.
After being in foreign countries for months on end and sometimes a year or more the WWII soldier learned to fully appreciate the United States.
My overseas tour of duty was an eighteen months duration. As our ship, the Westerly Victory, approached the port of NY and I viewed the silhouetted skyline of N.Y. City and the Statue of Liberty bathed in flood-lights, tears of gratitude flowed from my eyes.
It was then that I understood how much I loved my Country and what it stood for.
When in the second grade of school, our teacher instilled in us three things which I remember to this day: Have respect for your parents, have respect for your country and have respect for God.
Simple as it is, schooling of that nature is priceless.

Unfortunately today's 2nd graders are not taught these valuable principles!
