Sixty-eight years ago, the 12th of April 1945, the President of the United States, Franklin Roosevelt, died at his summer home in Warm Springs GA.
The news reached the men of G Company, 424th Regt. by means of a passing Army jeep. One of the occupants was waving an Army Stars & Stripes newspaper with a large headline which read, “President Roosevelt Dead!”
We, the 2nd Battalion of the 424th Regt. (G Co. a part of) was, at that time, on a hike near Rennne, France in the Brittney Peninsula . By then the 106th Division was up to full strength and in several days would be on the way back to the front lines in Germany.
There were 90,000 German troops bottled up at St. Nazarre, on the coast of the Brittney Peninsula, France. That place contained a Submarine Enclosure that was still serving German Submarines.
Thus it was necessary to maintain some troops there to keep that stronghold of German troops surrounded. Troops of the 106th Division pulled that duty for a few weeks and that is how the Division was awarded credit for the Northern, France campaign.
The Golden Lion Division was back on the front lines again about mid April to take part in brining the War to a conclusion, nevertheless, that is another story.
