Notes from Zac's interview for the Veteran's History project:
Post-war this former POW read up a lot on the history of the war. The interview given for the Veteran's History Project covers a lot of ground in a smooth, coherent way. My listening yesterday was interrupted but here are a few notes gleaned about his pre-battle days. His accounts of battle are detailed, too.
Just out of High School, Zak was drafted and chosen to go into the ASTP program. He and others with him received the military training that was a pre-cursor of this college program but at that point the program was cancelled and he and those with him were assigned to the 106th Infantry Division in Indiana.
He shipped out on the Aquitania and was quartered in a former ballroom. He tells of a freighter that was following them at one point and had a warning shot fired over the bow to tell it to leave.
