From now on no more foxholes, no more getting shot at, no more artillery missals whistling overhead. Plus there would be no more screaming memeies (rockets) and buzz-bombs to fret about.
Chow, from now, on would be served at regular intervals.
As of this date, 05/08/1945, no further night-patrols would be necessary.
A Soldier could expect a shower and a complete change of clothes at least one a week. Also, he didn’t have to use his knees as a desktop anymore while writing a letter to his loved ones back home.
Three day passes to Paris were now the thing to look forward to instead of wishing for a million dollar wound to escape combat duty for a few weeks for a clean bed and hot chow three times a day.
That’s the way it was sixty-eight years ago today which was VE Day, Victory in Europe. A day that the lights came on once again all over Europe

Floyd,
Thanks for sharing these memories.
What an amazing time!
Do you remember any celebrations where you were?

Connie:
No celebrations where we were at Heidesheim, Germany.
However, a B17 Bomber flew at an altitude of about 200ft. over the P.O.W. Compound & dropped some flares. That incident almost created a stamped inside the P.O.W. enclosure.
The village had a speaker system mounted on several rooftops in the town. The end of the War was announced over those speakers to the German civilians. Other than that all was quiet in the entire area all day.

I hadn't thought about it. But I guess in Germany there wouldn't be much open celebration by the locals at this time...
Dad was in France at the time and the locals went wild!

Connie:
No, the German citizens didn't celebrate VE day, nevertheless, more than several of them stated that they were glad the War was kaput; meaning over with.
Many of the German P.O.W.s said the same thing.
For them, the War started in early Sept. 1939. In six years time, Germany lost millions of their young men thanks to one mad man called Hitler.
