It is evening time on this date (12/18/44), 69 years ago, and this person along with the gunner is situated at their battle post (60 mm mortar). Out of the darkness of the night appeared a Company Messenger with verbal orders that were “Withdraw from your positions, leave heavy weapons and related ammunition behind, travel lightly, proceed to Company Head Quarters to receive further orders."
The Enemy, some how, must have known of our situation because they commenced firing screaming me-me’s, in our direction, as my squad descended the reverse side of the hill toward Company Head Quarters. That was an anxious moment for five surprised Soldiers of our heavy weapons platoon.
This was the beginning of a very long night for the Mortar Squad Members of G Company, 424th Infantry Regiment.
