It was frustrating to be without overshoes during the B.O.B. days. Without them a Soldier’s boots and socks would get wet and often feet would freeze, particularly in twenty-five degree below zero temperatures.
I recall seeing rear echelon troops, both officers & enlisted troops, with overshoes yet, 424th Regiment front line troops trudged through the snow in just their combat boots.
In due time a man’s feet, under those conditions, would freeze. In combat circumstances however, a Soldier did not run for medical help in that state of affairs; he kept going forward and sought medical help when the objective was realized.
Finally, in March 1945, overshoes were delivered to us, in bulk, via an Army truck and dumped on the ground. The distribution method came to us by an oral message, passed through down from one platoon to another. That dispatch was, “ Overshoes have arrived, come & help your selves.”
By the time this Soldier reached the distribution area, there were just two left that were his size. Guess what? They were both for the same foot!
Oh well, now it was the month of March; in a few weeks they wouldn’t be needed anyway.
