Our Air Force Bombers and German 88 anti-air craft missals created a breath taking display one day in the sky over the front lines.
American B 17 Bombers were flying at an altitude of about thirty-thousand feet and they left a vapor trail in the sky as did the P51 fighter planes that escorted them in flight.
German 88 anti-aircraft fire dotted the sky around the American planes with plumes of black smoke when they exploded.
It appeared as though someone with a big fly-swatter was swatting some of the planes out of the heavens. A wing fell off, a tail section fell off, a plane broke in two smack in the middle.
We looked to see how many crewmembers were able to get out as the planes spiraled earthward. The B-17s exploded in a ball of fire when they crashed into the ground.
Some of the airmen struggled to coax their parachutes to drift toward the American lines.
Finally, there was a race between American Soldiers and the Germans to see who pick the crew members up.
American Soldiers rescued some of the Airmen and German Soldiers took some as P.O.W’s.
When the spectacle was over, all of us went back our usual occupation of fighting the war.
To this day, I can visualize that entire episode in my mind.

Morning, Floyd,
Sounds like a memorable and terrible sight.
Do you remember where you were when this took place?

Hi Connie:
I don't think it was the day that the skies cleared, however it happened between Christmas and new years day. It was in an area where one could see quite a distance because we witnessed disabled American planes explode in a ball of fire when they hit the ground. Our boys (Soldiers) made an attempt, in American vehicles, mostly jeeps, to rescue our parachuting airmen as they drifted earthward. The air currant above caused the Airmen to drift toward the German lines and one could see the crewmen trying to spill the air out of their shuts to drop inside of American lines.

A great story, Floyd. As usual.....you provided another bit of personal color to our historical pictures of the war. Thanks so much.
